Sunday saw a crisp, sunny day at Barossa United Stadium for a home game against Adelaide Olympic. It was always going to be a
challenging match, with Olympic sitting second on the ladder and Barossa United close behind in third.
Olympic took the centre kick and immediately attacked, with Ava Knowles making a strong early save to deny the opening chance. They
continued to apply pressure, but Barossa’s defence held firm. Leila Bowley and Annabel Bowley worked hard to shut down the attack,
while Liliana Catanzariti repeatedly cleared the ball to keep Olympic out. A clearance kick from Jemima Teague found Emme Mowbray,
who delivered a great cross into Lucy Amos, creating Barossa’s first strong attack on goal. The momentum started to swing Barossa’s
way, with another attacking passage following soon after.
A turnover in play allowed Olympic to counterattack, and they managed to score in the 10th minute to take a 1–0 lead.
Barossa responded well with some good passages of play through the midfield. Strong defensive work from Jana Tscharke and Leila
Bowley, combined with another clearance from Jemima Teague, set up another attack from Lucy Amos. The pressure remained in
Barossa’s attacking half, with Emme Mowbray unleashing a great strike at goal that resulted in a corner kick. Unfortunately, Barossa
was unable to convert the opportunity.
Both teams continued to create chances in an entertaining first half. Maya Garfield and Annabel Bowley played key roles in defence,
breaking up several Olympic attacks. A well-cleared centre kick from Isabel Dickson saw Barossa push forward once again, but they
couldn’t quite find the finishing touch. Ruby Roth worked hard on the wing, providing support and helping move the ball forward
whenever the opportunity arose.
The intensity of the game began to show, with Isabel Dickson going down injured and needing to be substituted. Following the stoppage,
Liliana Catanzariti came back onto the field and immediately made an impact with some strong attacking play. Another late first-half
substitution saw Maya Garfield and Charlotte Kitschke return with fresh legs, helping Barossa maintain possession and keep the ball in
their attacking half heading into the halftime break, with Olympic leading 1–0.
Olympic came out strongly in the second half and immediately tested the Barossa defence. Ava Knowles produced several excellent
saves as Olympic launched repeated attacks on goal. Barossa’s defence stood up under enormous pressure, working hard to clear the
ball and push play back into Olympic’s defensive half, but they struggled to create clear scoring opportunities. Molly Rich worked
tirelessly up front, applying pressure to the Olympic defence and chasing every opportunity.
Olympic eventually broke through again early in the second half, extending their lead to 2–0.
A great sideline ball from Emme Mowbray created another opportunity for Barossa, resulting in a corner kick. The delivery into the box
almost found its target, but Barossa was unable to convert.
Olympic found another gear during the second half and continued to control possession, creating multiple shots on goal. Ava Knowles
was outstanding between the posts, making several quality saves to keep Barossa in the contest. Barossa continued to work hard
through the centre of the field, but Olympic’s defence proved difficult to break down.
Late in the game, Barossa produced one of their best attacking passages. Emme Mowbray played the ball through to Pippa Brassil, who
delivered a perfect cross to Lucy Amos. The resulting shot looked destined for goal but was well saved by the Olympic goalkeeper.
Olympic quickly transitioned the ball back downfield, catching Barossa on the back foot and scoring their third goal to extend the lead
to 3–0.
Barossa never gave up, continuing to defend strongly and push forward whenever the opportunity arose, but they were unable to find
the back of the net before the final whistle.
Despite the 3–0 result, it was a well-fought contest between two quality teams. Every Barossa United player worked hard from the first
whistle to the last, and while the scoreboard didn’t fall Barossa’s way, the effort, determination and teamwork shown throughout the
match was something the girls can be proud of.
