The inaugural Steinborner Cup delivered exactly the kind of contest we had all hoped, as the SL2 first team played out a tense 1-1 draw with Angle Vale. With both sides eager to be the first name etched onto the new trophy, the game developed into a physical, hard-fought encounter played out under warm conditions.
Angle Vale struck first, going 1-0 up in the 15th minute to pile further tension onto the home side. The visitors’ early goal put the team on the back foot, but rather than buckle under the pressure, the Barossa players dug in for a physical battle across the middle of the park with Patrick Roberts Junior showcasing his fast and physical play down the wing.
The equaliser came in the 57th minute, and it was new recruit Harrison Mattner who provided it, showing his quality to level the scores and lift the home crowd. From there, both teams continued to push hard for the win, with the game staying physical and end-to-end until the final whistle. Nathaniel Roberts in goals for Barossa had a solid game pulling off some excellent saves to keep the home side in the contest.
A tense finish saw the home side create several excellent chances to snatch victory with Felix Stokoe creating some great chances near the end, but Angle Vale held firm and the match ended 1-1, a fair result on the balance of play, and a fitting way to launch the Steinborner Cup.
