U14 Girls – Carl’s Junior Youth Girls Premier Cup, Round 1

Jack Smith Park, Novar Gardens | Wednesday night, 6.30pm

Under the lights of Jack Smith Park, with traffic hurrying past and a strong midweek crowd gathered, Barossa United’s U14 girls took on Premier League team West Torrens Birkalla in a Round 1 Cup clash that had excitement written all over it.

The opening half saw captain Phoebe Koch lead with poise, while Maya Garfield guarded the goals with relative ease. A strong early ball from Molly Rich released Lucy Amos into attack, setting the tone. Molly’s tireless midfield work was matched by the relentless energy of Lilly Catanzariti, affectionately dubbed the “little tiger” by the opposition supporters for her fearless ball-winning throughout the game. Phoebe’s long passing repeatedly opened the field, while Jemima Teague and Daisy Barlow stood firm at the back with endless clearances, supported by Annabel Bowley’s endless persistence on the right. Despite Birkalla striking the net first, Barossa responded through determined runs from Ava Knowles and Ruby Roth, and just before the break Lucy thundered home a brilliant equaliser. Pippa Brassil’s forward pressure and calm defending from Jana Tscharke and Ruby, ensured the teams entered halftime locked at 1–1.

The second half lifted another gear. Ava took over in goals with confidence, while Isabel Dickson and Charlotte Kitschke drove constant momentum through the middle, with Isabel even taking an unlikely shot on goal. Lucy converted a classy free kick to put Barossa ahead 2-1, but Birkalla answered quickly with two quick goals, testing Barossa’s belief and resolve. Leila Bowley, at right-back produced many crucial clearances as the clock ticked down, and Ava stood tall under pressure.

With minutes remaining the crowd and bench cheered hard, and Barossa surged forward again. Lucy and Pippa repeatedly tore down the wings creating opportunities, Phoebe firing long and Molly delivering a perfectly weighted pass for Lucy to complete her hat-trick and level the scores, 3 all. Even central defender, Daisy pushed forward in support as the girls sensed something special was coming.

In the dying seconds, Lucy swung in a perfectly placed corner and sealed the moment, scoring her fourth to snatch an unforgettable 4–3 victory over Birkalla. The crowd erupted, the team celebrated with Barossa marching onto the next round. What a night of persistence and heart from every girl on the pitch. Well done Barossa U14 girls.
