Under 6s Turn the Tables on Gawler Eagles Yellow
Barossa United’s Under 6s were involved in an incredibly close and competitive match against Gawler Eagles Yellow, with the
momentum shifting between the two teams throughout the game before Barossa eventually came out on top.
There was some extra significance to this match for Barossa. The last time the two teams met, Gawler Eagles Yellow handed the Under
6s their only loss of the entire season, so this was another opportunity for the kids to test themselves against a team that had previously
challenged them.
Barossa made the perfect start when Colby Sauer opened the scoring. Gawler Eagles Yellow responded strongly, finding the back of the
net several times and leaving Barossa chasing the game.
The kids kept fighting, and their persistence was rewarded late in the first half. Lenny McKenzie found the back of the net before
Hamish Kelly followed soon after, bringing the teams back level heading into the half-time break.
Gawler Eagles Yellow again came out strongly after the break and regained the lead, setting up another test for Barossa.
Once again, the kids responded. Alaric Neylon produced a brilliant individual effort, taking the ball forward himself and finishing
beautifully to bring Barossa level. Shortly afterwards, Hamish Kelly produced the decisive moment of the match, launching an
outstanding long-range strike from around the halfway line to put Barossa in front.
There was plenty of hard tackling from both sides in a match that remained competitive until the final whistle. Finley Martin worked
hard defensively, while Lily A continued to contribute across the field. Alaric Neylon and Hamish Kelly were also excellent when tracking
back defensively, helping shut down a number of Gawler attacks when the game was on the line.
It was a fantastic team performance from all six players. After falling behind on two separate occasions, Barossa continued to work for
one another and never allowed the game to get away from them.
The performance was made even more impressive with the team’s regular coach unable to be there on the day. A big thank you goes to
Ethan Nolan from Barossa United’s SAASL squad, who stepped up to help lead the Under 6s and take on the coaching duties. Ethan
Nolan did a fantastic job guiding and encouraging the kids through such a close contest, and the team greatly appreciated him stepping
in when they needed him.
Coming away with another victory was particularly rewarding given Gawler Eagles Yellow remain the only team to have beaten
Barossa this season. This time, the Under 6s showed plenty of resilience to fight their way back and turn an incredibly tight contest in
their favour.
