FK Beograd 4–1 BUFC U12
Barossa made the journey to Fulham Gardens for their first-round match after not having played a game for nearly a month. The boys
were eager to get their season underway and show what they were capable of.
Beograd took the game to Barossa early and made life difficult on a challenging pitch. The home side scored three early goals to put
Barossa on the back foot.
Barossa found it difficult to move the ball around and create space early on, but they never gave up chasing and battling to win the ball
back. Jacob Berning pulled off some great saves, while Nathan Ruch ran his socks off at centre-back.
Ashton Magarey and Oscar Beach had their work cut out for them, but after the early setback they found their feet and began standing
up to Beograd’s attacks.
Barossa pulled a goal back just before halftime when Jackson Kalleske collected the ball from a throw-in on the left wing, rounded two
defenders, and calmly slotted home at the near post.
Barossa came out the hungrier of the two teams in the second half and started to take the game to Beograd. Harrison McRoe and
Johann Krzoska found more success out wide, while Elliott Cockram put in some strong tackles through the middle of the park.
Substitutes Oskar McKenzie and Leo Jasper also played their parts. Oskar McKenzie made several important clearances to deny
Beograd, while Leo Jasper showed plenty of confidence by taking on the opposition whenever he had the opportunity.
Captaining the team for the first time, Riley Rewell held the team together and was vocal throughout the match, exactly as his coach
had asked.
Despite their improved second-half performance, Barossa couldn’t create the clear-cut chances needed to get back into the contest, with
Beograd adding a fourth goal to seal the victory.
A much stronger second-half display gives the team plenty to build on heading into next week’s home fixture. Player of the Match was
awarded to Jacob Berning, whose outstanding goalkeeping kept Barossa in the game.
